Pit Bulls are NOT what you think they are.

Yes,it's that time again! Time for another exciting informative, educational post about Pit Bulls. The fine folks at HUGABULL say it so much better than I do. Would you please be so kind as to read what they have to say and have learned from their experience and research? All you have to do is click the above link and read a bit. Easy Peasy.

You may also enjoy reading about these good folks in the state below me. They run LawDogsUSA a service that provides law enforcement agencies with trained narcotics and bomb sniffing dogs. Here's what the folks have to say about the Pit Bull.
"I have found the American Pit Bull to be superior as a narcotics and explosives detection dog. Please note: due to their inherent "people friendly" nature, I do NOT offer American pit bulls as "biting"(patrol) dogs. LawDogsUSA offers sweet natured, friendly detection dogs only"

Hmmmm??? Isn't that interesting? It's not just ME who claims
Pit Bulls are friendly and sweet.

Our family has come to love our very own pitbull. She's not ours exactly but as some of you may remember, she may as well have been, for all the time she spent at our house!

We first met Annie when she introduced herself to Ciari with a kiss. I will fully admit that both Jig and I were a little nervous about her, based purely on her breed BUT after spending some time with her I quickly(and intelligently)
concluded that she was just like any other dog, only better. Pit Bulls have a certain charm to them that other dogs just don't have.

Over the next couple of years we grew to love that dog deeply. She did not betray my trust in her once and was always sweet and loving to my kids. She also got along pretty well with my cats too and with all other dogs. She was the biggest wimp alive, going out of her way to avoid trouble at all costs and frankly I'll be dammed if anyone tells me that that GOOD dog is dangerous just because she's a pitty. Because if you start thinking Annie is vicious based on breed alone then that would mean that this sweet girl was vicious, based on her breed.
Beans
And I will not allow ANYONE to say such a thing about a dog who was part of my life for so long and enriched it so well. Imagine if we supported Breed Ban Legislation? Once they get rid of all the Pit Bulls, they'd be sure to go after Rotti's. What breed is next? May be a breed you love. Think about that....

Does this dog look like she's going to suddenly "snap"?

She's fricking SMILING!
Ooooh, are those her LOCKING JAWS OF STEEL?

Do I sound pissed? Good! because, I AM! It's bad enough that good dogs are getting abused and killed by people every fucking day on this earth,it's another to realize that dogs are being killed out of fear and misunderstanding by people WHO THINK THEY ARE DOING THE RIGHT THING!!!! That my friends,is scary.

In parting,I'll leave you with this video. Watch yourself,it's powerful and had me sobbing. Please, have a heart.

dont know where i fall in this...

i can hide behind the "cant have a short hair dog in the climate I live" excuse as to why i dont want one...but hay i dont want a st bernard either, Im anti slobber...but I completely admit I act different with a pit type dog coming towards me than a lab or whatever...media conditioned? perhaps....but its one of those things where both sides claim to be right, and both sides are promoting their stance, so...who to believe?

I will say, that Im against a bylaw against a breed...basically just a long winded way of saying, i dont wanna be involved...

sure, this breed is more prone to bite than that breed, statiscally...but then a bite from a pom is different than a pyr

but thats like saying trucks are dangerous cuz theyre bigger, which is true, yet over 80% of accidents involving trucks arent caused by the truck...

im against killing all the cows because ONE tested for bse, so i have to be fair and apply the same logic to pits...

My cousin has four pitties and has started to breed them. Her and her boyfriend actually moved here to the Island from Toronto, to escape the new pitbull laws there. Now I have to say, until I had met her dogs .. I was leary .. still am. But I'm more leary about any large dog that approaches me without wagging it's tail.
But her dogs, I trust my girls to play with .. and have pictures of how loving the dogs are towards them. The one isn't a huge people person and therefor has shied me away from it. My cousin just doesn't let it out of it's kennel when we're around. But that's not necessarily because it's a pittie.

Preach on sister .. cuz someone needs to defend the voiceless! :)

Aww thanks Rach and Bernie for your thoughts.
I admit to be cautious too,so the conditioning can effect those who feel in their hearts that the breed is just another dog too.
I'm nervous around dogs I don't know anyways though(years of being a paper girl:P)
It just kills me to think of decent dogs being murdered for no good reason.
Thanks for listening to me rant! I appreciate your thoughts:)

I totally agree with you, Lael. I can't even watch that video.....I've seen far too many that are cruel, disgusting and criminal! My son and his wife and son have two pitbulls. My son's in-laws are and always have been afraid of them around Jackson, who is now 5 years-old. Colin has them well trained and they are THE biggest babies ever.....they are so loving and sweet. They are our "grand-puppies". One of them has been almost fatally stabbed when protecting Colin's property from vandalism and a break in...loyalty is a very strong quality in these dogs and I for one would appreciate that kind of protection.
Sooooo.....I adore pitbulls, but do not ever trust a dog, no matter the breed. And small dogs CAN give very vicious bites too....I know cuz I have seen it(sorry Bernie).

No,it`s not just you and we don`t have to claim it.
It`s a fact.
The facts and the experts don`t support BSL.
http://www.animalfarmfoundation.org/topic.php?id=21&topic=17
Owners of ALL breeds/types of dogs need to be held responsible for the behaviour of their dogs.
Most of the public and media have never set eyes on the breeds that are targeted by BSL,which are
1)Staffordshire Bull Terrier
2)American Staffordshire Terrier &
3)APBT
The public and the media call any dog that has a square head, whip tail and short hair a "Pit Bull".
There are at least 24 other Pure Breed dogs that are commonly misidentified as "Pit Bulls" and then you have all the various mutt mixtures.
In Ontario,Canada the above 3 Pure Breeds are banned along with "Substantially Similar" dogs??
No one(including the Gov`t) is quite sure what that means, yet the 4 most common biters in this study

http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/injury-bles/chirpp/injrep-rapbles/dogbit-eng.php

were as follows:
“Of the 385 records in the study, 278 (72.2%) specified the breed of the dog. There were 50 types of purebreds and 33 types of cross-breeds identified. The most common breeds were German Shepherds (40), Cocker Spaniels (16), Rottweilers (16) and Golden Retrievers (15).”
as seen in this paper

http://www.theblackpaper.org/

The breeds were removed from the original study after Ontario passed Bill 132(a.k.a "Pit Bull" ban)

The 3 banned breeds aren`t even on the radar.
Why would they be the ones banned and the grandfathered dogs be ordered muzzled?
Perhaps there is a political agenda behind all this BSL nonsense.

Unfortunately a lot of people get their "facts" from Newspaper headlines rather than from factual sources.

Good blog entry BTW and a heads up.
I don`t know if it`s just from this end but I see the YouTube box but there`s no video.

Well, I was searching pittie info as per usual, stumbled upon your site and loved your post defending these great dogs. BSL is total BS and only ends up punishing really great owners, like myself, while irresponsible dog owners continue to harass the neighborhood with whatever dog they own at the time.

'Pitbulls' are awesome dogs and are only as good as the people who train/socialize them, as is the case with any breed of dog. The only difference being that aggressive pitbulls make the headlines, while (some) labs, (some) retrievers and (some) little furries continue to terrorize in peace.

My stupid neighbors have 3 of them in the back yard they are skinny I mean I can see their ribs! I think of you each morning when I give them food and water I wish you were closer so we could steal them and you could have them they are so sweet. I may end up having to call on them
